Lack of volunteers, pole space halts hanging of Butler veteran banners

28 veteran banners are waiting to be hung by American Legion 117 volunteers once a bucket truck becomes available.

Subscribe online or in print to read the full article and find out how to help.Volunteers from the community are needed to hang a last batch of veteran banners in the streets of Butler, where more than 400 of the flags currently fly.The veteran banners are hung and organized by a team at the American Legion Post 117. Jim Dittmer, the legion's former commander who has handled the signs, said they're being held up right now because they're without a bucket truck, which makes the work to hang the banners quicker and safer for volunteers.Other issues led to the Legion's April 15 decision to stop the banner program, excluding the banners they still have to hang. They're no longer taking applications from families for new banners.There is a caveat — they will still add veterans who were killed in action or missing in action.Two factors motivated the decision to stop the program: a lack of volunteers and a lack of space.
