Stained-glass windows offered in Mingle tour

SAXONBURG — Visitors to Thursday's Mingle on Main event in Saxonburg will have a chance to view the stained-glass windows of a Main Street church and learn their history.

St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 310 W. Main St., is celebrating its 150th year and has invited the public to see its windows during Mingle on Main.

Tours will be conducted at 6 and 7 p.m. by Jeannine Sanford, a church member.

When St. Luke's congregation built the church in 1928, certain items were eliminated to cut the cost of construction. One particular item was the idea of “art glass” windows. This action by council saved $840.

The church windows were given as inspiration by various families and church groups in 1947.

The 10-side windows in the sanctuary depict scenes from the teachings of Jesus Christ. The donors of each window paid $185 for this honor.

The original clear windows of the church are still in place, and the stained-glass panels were installed against the inside of the clear windows. Just a few years ago, clear windows were put against the inside of the stained-glass windows to stop cold air coming in from the outside. When facing the altar, at the left side is a three-panel window which cost $375. To the left of the organ is the balcony window which cost $200. The large round “Rose Window” above the organ cost $375 and measures eight feet in diameter. These and the other windows in St. Luke's were built by Pittsburgh Stained Glass Studios in 1947. In 1979, the St. Luke's Church Council was surprised to find the same studio still in business to install additional windows.
