Police urge caution as school start nears

With schools reopening their doors later this month, state police advise that drivers heed the coming traffic.

“We should all expect it to take a few minutes longer to get where we are going once school starts,” said Capt. Steve Ignatz in a news release.

Ignatz advised parents to make sure their children are ready to drive to school if they're driving alone. Texting, overly loud music and raucous passengers should be avoided, he said.

“Please make sure the young driver is not too tired to safely drive,” Ignatz said. “Some kids have not gotten up early for a couple months.”

Along with morning and afternoon traffic, school buses will also soon return to roads.

From early 2008 to late 2017, the most recent data available on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's online crash information tool shows that Butler County saw an average of 13 crashes involving school buses per year.

“The start of school is an exciting time for students and parents alike,” Ignatz said. “Please always drive with caution.”

The first day of class for students in county school districts are:

Slippery Rock Area School District — Aug. 21

Freeport Area School District — Aug. 22;

Moniteau School District — Aug. 26

Seneca Valley School District and Karns City Area School District —, Aug. 27

South Butler County School District and Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District — Aug. 28

Butler Area School District — Aug. 29

Mars Area School District — Sept. 9.
