Baseball's even better combined with running

Baseball — it's part of summer. And baseball's even better when combined with a fun run.

Two baseball-themed 5Ks are on the calendar for next Saturday, July 27 at 9 a.m.

The John “Cossy” Constantino 5k honors the late Freeport resident, an avid runner and baseball fanatic, with a fun run through the town as part of Freeport International Baseball's annual tournament festivities.

Constantino lived across the street from Freeport's James Swartz Field and played in Freeport International Baseball's Old Timers' game at age 90.

This Freeport race has been dedicated in his name for the past five years of its more than 15-year history.

Chuck Sarver, race director and current president of Freeport International Baseball, says the run was his idea as a fundraiser and fun adjunct to the tournament, which draws regional and international teams.

Sarver is an experienced runner who ran the Boston Marathon for the first time this spring. He and daughter Jessica are currently training to run in the Erie Marathon in September.

Sarver expects approximately 100 participants for the 5K, which begins in front of Freeport's junior high school and winds through Freeport streets, ending in the outfield of the baseball stadium. Except for a slight detour due to bridge construction in Freeport a few years ago, the run has used the same course.

The event is open to dogs, kids in strollers and walkers, but traffic will open on the course after 3 hours.

In the spirit of Freeport International Baseball's motto: “For the love of the game,” there are no competitive awards in the 5K. Instead, finishers gather on the baseball bleachers after the run to share in a random drawing for prizes both donated and purchased by the organizers.

Runners are welcome to stay for the first International Baseball game of the day at 11 a.m. The tournament wraps up with a final game, USA vs World, at 8 p.m., with players representing the continental U.S., Japan, Australia and Puerto Rico followed by fireworks at 10 p.m.

Register online at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Freeport/JohnCossyConstantinoMemorial5K or on race day at 7 a.m.

For more information about the run or the baseball tournament, call Sarver at 724-766-4710 or visit www.fortheloveofthegame.org.

Also on July 27 at 9 a.m., Rube's Run 5K takes to the streets of Prospect for the 18th year to celebrate “Old-Fashioned Baseball” and to raise funds for the Prospect Area Preservation Society and its museum.

Runner and Prospect resident Jim Gallagher has been race director for the entire time. He recalls that neighbor and former Preservation Society president Mary Harmon had seen him running about town and offered him the position.

Rube's Run is named for George Edward “Rube” Waddell, a talented but eccentric Hall of Fame pitcher from the early 1900s. Rube's Run 5K passes by his childhood home on its 3-loop tour of Prospect.

Start and finish this year returns to the original location in front of the Presbyterian Church in Prospect. The rest of the course remains the same. Participants are advised to take care along the Rt. 528 portion of the course since runners are limited to a single lane of the road.

Rube's Run awards top 3 male and female finishers as well as top masters and first 3 men and women in age groups from 12 & Under through 70-plus. Kids ages 10 and under are welcome to run a free non-competitive run around the block.

Following the race, all participants enjoy an “Old-Fashioned Baseball Breakfast” of hot dogs and drinks. Gallagher says there are usually plenty of hot dogs for spectators, but donations of food are accepted.

Online registration for Rube's Run 5K stay open until July 26 at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Prospect/RUBESRUN. Day-of-event registration begins at 7 a.m. For more information, call Gallagher at 724-841-4306.
