Lane restrictions, closures for I-79 work begin Thursday
CRANBERRY TWP — Work to replace the southbound bridge on Interstate 79 will result in lane restrictions Thursday.
According to information from PennDOT, lane restrictions will be put in place beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday. One lane of I-79 south will move to the temporary bridge now in place.
The restrictions start at the intersection of I-79 and Route 528 and end at Route 228. One lane of traffic will be maintained.
A full road closure on North Boundary Road in the township will begin at 10 p.m. Friday to allow for the changes above to be made. As a detour, motorists at the intersection of North Boundary Road and Marshall Road should take Marshall Road to Rowan Road and then onto Route 19 back to North Boundary Road.
The road is scheduled to reopen July 22.
The $14.6 million project was bid earlier this year, with work being done by Golden Triangle Construction of Imperial. In addition to the temporary bridges that have been installed, the project includes approach work, drainage, guide rail, lighting and other miscellaneous work.
According to PennDOT, the design calls for the southbound structure to be replaced this season, with a shutdown over the winter. Work on the northbound structure will begin during the 2020 construction season.
The scheduled two-year project has an estimated completion date of May 21, 2021, according to PennDOT documents.
