For the 12th straight year, tolls will rise on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission on Tuesday approved a 6 percent toll increase, effective Jan. 5.

The increase will affect E-ZPass, cash and toll-by-plate passenger and commercial vehicles.

According to information from the Turnpike Commission, the most common passenger vehicle toll will increase from $1.40 to $1.50 for E-ZPass customers and $2.30 to $2.50 for cash customers.

For Class-5 tractor trailers, the most common increase will be from $3.70 to $4 for E-ZPass and $16.30 to $17.30 for cash.

Cashless tolling locations — including the Beaver Valley Expressway and the Greensburg Bypass as well as the Gateway tolling point near Ohio on Interstate 76 — will see the increases take effect on Oct. 27.

The increase is needed to help meet debt-service costs associated with the Turnpike Commission’s contributions to state transit operations as well as the 10-year capital program.

According to Mark Compton, chief executive officer of the Turnpike Commission, $6.6 billion has been put back into the state’s roads since 2007.

“We are doing what we can to mind our shop and manage costs as we deal with our economic realities,” Compton said. “For the 2019 fiscal year ending May 31, we’re projecting operating expenses to come in almost $40 million under budget while actual expense growth over the 2018 fiscal year is projected to be less than 1 percent.”

Estimated toll revenue for the 2020 fiscal year is $1.4 billion, with debt service marked at about $700 million.
