Perkins operator files for bankruptcy

The operator of the Perkins Restaurant and Bakery in Cranberry Township filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this month.

According to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh, 5171 Campbells Land Co. of Rankin filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 8. This option allows the business to reorganize while putting a hold on creditor accounts.

The company operates 27 Perkins restaurants, including in New Castle and Erie as well as New York and Ohio. Court documents indicate estimated assets are between $1 million and $10 million, with estimated liabilities between $10 million and $50 million.

Creditors include the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, which is owed $1.3 million. Memphis-based Perkins is listed as being owed $1.5 million, while Perkins Holdings LLC is owed an additional $55,000.

The filing comes as Campbells Land Co. faces a lawsuit from Perkins & Marie Callendar’s LLC of Memphis in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. The four-count suit was filed in June and claims a breach of contract for failure to pay $2.2 million in royalties and other fees.
