Pet care store plans mulled

Dog Stop could open in Adams

ADAMS TWP — The township planning commission is considering an animal care store.

The Dog Stop co-founder Chris Kane presented his business plan to commissioners at their meeting last week.

Kane looks to occupy the former McGinnis Sisters Special Food Stores along Route 228.

“Basically our use is ... a high-end place to take care of animals,” Kane said. “Hopefully, we can take on 7,000 square-feet.”

With 20 locations in seven states — including one in Wexford — The Dog Stop company offers overnight boarding, day care, grooming and American-made retail services.

Other businesses at the site include a brewery and a gym, which already sent a letter supporting Kane.

Kane told the planning commission The Dog Stop aims to provide dogs — and cats — with comfortable quarters. A turf yard behind the building aims to keep dogs active all day.

Kane said the curb across the street would need to be moved back about 8 feet to accommodate the yard.

He added that pets boarded overnight won't have a human sitter, but will be monitored by camera.

“We don't want to have any disturbances,” Kane said. “When they go down, they go down.”

If approved, the store would feature 40 kennels and be able to hold 30 to 55 dogs. The amount of time the animals spend outside can be adjusted to fit a particular area's need, according to Kane.

The company filed a conditional use application, which means Kane will present his plan at the next supervisors meeting.

Planning Commission Chairman Martin McKinney said he's interested in knowing more about the project.

“That space has been empty for a little while,” McKinney said. “It's kind of nice to see somebody actively looking at it.”
