BLT's young actors make 'Peter Pan' fly

The Lost Boys get found in Butler Little Theatre's Youth Production, “Peter Pan,” opening this week at the Butler Little Theatre. This interesting twist on the classic by J.M. Barrie is full of the usual characters but they roll out differently in the newer version by John Caird and Trevor Nunn.

Under the direction of Christian Cendrowski, a cast of young thespians brings the characters of Neverland to life. Surely it took more than pixie dust to orchestrate this production. Well-prepared actors, good staging along with some impressive swordplay made this an enjoyable show.

The versatile Luke Pfeifer deftly shifts in between the scenes setting the stage both literally and figuratively describing what the audience will see, could see, should see and what it can't see. From dog to crocodile he doesn't miss a beat or syllable of the wordy dialogue he espouses throughout the show.

Shadowlynn Reges-Pollarine had a very efficient and methodical approach to her role as Peter Pan. Quite the meaty role, she handled it commendably right down to some skillful sword fighting.

The Darling children are just that, darling. Naomi Eberle takes the lead as big sister Wendy, with John played by Conner Yelich and Michael played by Lila Mistick rounding out the trio of travelers. Eberle's fearless approach to the stage conveys a confidence beyond her years. Her performance includes a little song, some humor and a lot of mothering.

Journeying to Neverland is done without magical sets or high-tech wizardry; the simplicity allows the acting to take center stage. In most cases the acting flows easily while some moments beg to be squeezed a bit harder. The Lost Boys and Pirates did not disappoint. Captain Hook, played by Shaun Klein, was a sassy villain the audience wanted to dislike. Klein also portrayed Mr. Darling, but seemed more at ease as a Pirate. Hook's posse of pirates featured Christian Baughman, Ian Reitemeyer and Victor Eberle as quite a comical, bespectacled Smee.

Naomi's chemistry with Pan and the Lost Boys is tender and sweet, and her defiance of the Pirates as expected. The boys were a bunch of characters with jovial banter, each had a personality of their own. Slightly, portrayed by Sam Miller, offered up an entertaining performance and had the audience snickering to be sure.

When life gets a little crazy and escape is always a solution, to quote Peter Pan, all you need is faith, trust and a little bit of pixie dust. All three are available this weekend at the Butler Little Theatre.

Tickets are on sale online or at the door 45 minutes before show time on Bltgroup.org. The show opens Thursday and runs through Sunday at the Butler Little Theatre.
