Performing arts series adds lectures at SRU

The Queen's Six, a group from St. George's Chapel Choir at Windsor Castle in England, is one of the groups scheduled to perform in the new season of the Slippery Rock University Performing Arts & Lecture Series.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Beginning with the 2019-20 season, the Slippery Rock University series of performing arts will include nationally known speakers presenting featured lectures as part of the offerings.

To reflect the change, the series has been rebranded as the SRU Performing Arts & Lecture Series.

The four main stage shows include:

Disney and the Boys, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the University Union.

Singers and entertainers Will and Anthony Nunziata will take audiences on a ride through the music and stories of iconic Disney songs.

The Queen's Six, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in the University Union.

The group members are from St. George's Chapel Choir at Windsor Castle in England and perform a broad repertoire, from early chant, Renaissance, madrigals and folk songs to upbeat jazz and pop arrangements.

Virtuoso fiddler Eileen Ivers, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6, in the University Union.

A Grammy Award winner and original star of “Riverdance,” Ivers will weave traditional Irish songs, beloved American carols and even a “jigging” Bach into a celebration of Christmas through music and dance.

Maureen McGovern, 7:30 p.m. March 21, in the University Union. McGovern has earned numerous Grammy nominations and an Oscar-winning No. 1 gold record. Her concert will include music by Paul Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and other musical icons of the '60s and '70s, as well as Irish melodies in honor of St. Patrick's Day. She will be joined by the SRU Concert Choir for several songs.

A fifth show, which can be added to the subscription, is Cirque Zuma Zuma, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1, 2020, in the Smith Student Center Ballroom. A one-time “America's Got Talent” finalist, the act has been called an African-style Cirque du Soleil.

Lecture series

A pair nationally renowned journalists will kick off the inaugural lecture series.“Crossing the Political Divide with Donna Brazile and Ana Navarro” is planned for 7 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Smith Student Center Ballroom.Brazile is an adjunct professor, author, syndicated columnist, television political commentator, and former interim national chairman of the Democratic National Committee.Navarro is a well-known Republican strategist; political analyst for CNN, CNN en Español, ABC News and Telemundo; and political contributor to ABC's “The View.”Brazile and Navarro will bring their insights from the world of politics and candid stories from behind the scenes to a practical talk about current political topics.The final speaker in the lecture season will be Soledad O'Brien, award-winning journalist, entrepreneur and host of the weekly syndicated political show, “Matter of Fact,” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Smith Student Center BallroomBoth lectures are free and open to the public.Visit www.sru.edu/pas for more information.
