JEFFERSON TWP — A head on Collision at about 5 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Great Belt Road and Freeport Road resulted in one person taken to the hospital.
State Police said a man driving one sedan was driving south on 356 when he tried to make a left turn onto Great Belt Road and colliding head-on with a sedan driven north on 356 by a woman.
As a result of the collision, the woman sustained a non-life threatening leg injury which prompted her transport by Saxonburg Ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital, according to police.
The woman extracted herself from the vehicle, and shortly after the car caught fire.
Saxonburg Fire Chief Christ Ballina said the fire started in the engine compartment and caused significant damage.
“It totaled the car. The interior and the engine compartment were shot,” Ballina said. “The only thing that survived was the back tires.”
The man was checked out and cleared by EMS at the scene.
Residents near the scene said many crashes took place at the intersection over the past year.
