First IRS reform bill in 20 years expected to be signed into law

A bill co-authored by U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., that would be the first reform of the Internal Revenue Service in more than two decades was signed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Ca., and was expected to be signed into law Friday by President Donald Trump

The Taxpayer First Act is the first IRS reform since 1998. The bill would require the IRS to update its customer service plan to mirror the standards Americans expect in the private sector.

The act also requires the agency to make technology upgrades to improve efficiency and better safeguard taxpayers’ private information, and establishes an independent appeals process to ensure that taxpayers receive fair hearings during disputes.
