Police investigate BB gun incident

Butler police are investigating a case of aggravated assault Friday afternoon when several people were hit with BB gun pellets at a wedding party on North Washington Street.

One person was hit in the neck and two were struck in the legs, said police Sgt. Jeremy Walters. Two others were apparently also hit.

“They left visible marks,” Walters said of the BB gunfire. The injuries were considered minor.

Butler Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service medics tended to the victims.

Police are remaining tight-lipped about the investigating, but Walters called the incident “a deliberate act.”

He said officers are following several investigative leads.

“We're talking to witnesses, suspects and victims,” Walters said. “It's a very fluid investigation. It's very active.”

He said police also continue to canvass the area looking for surveillance video that could aid the investigation.

The incident is being considered an aggravated assault, Walters said, in part because it involved a weapon, albeit a BB gun.

“The gun shoots high-velocity projectiles,” he said, “that could have caused serious bodily injury.”

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call 911 and request to speak to Butler police.
