New scam targeting Pa. sex offenders

Sex offenders in the state are the target of a new scam, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Police sent out an alert Friday on the scam, which typically involves a sex offender receiving a phone call from an individual claiming to be a law enforcement official. The caller tells the registered offender that he or she is not in compliance with their registration requirements, and occasionally claims to have a warrant for the offender's arrest.

The scammer then tells the offender that the issue can be resolved by providing a cash card or arranging a money order. State police said they never solicit registered sex offenders for monetary compensation to gain compliance with registration requirements. Those issues can only be resolved by an offender appearing at an approved registration site or by personal contact with a law enforcement official.

Any registered sex offender who has received this type of call should contact the Pennsylvania State Police, Megan's Law Section, at 866-771-3170.
