Drivers on Route 8 hoping to hop on the Pennsylvania Turnpike just south of Butler County will be in for a rude surprise this weekend.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will close access to the toll road from the Butler Valley interchange at exit 39 in Allegheny County, just five miles south of Butler County.

Notice of the closure didn't arrive until Friday morning, according to a spokeswoman for the commission, because they were waiting to begin repairs until weather forecasts appeared good enough to proceed.

Road crews will be at the interchange repairing the on-ramps to the turnpike. There wasn't an accident or other event prompting the repairs — the ramps are simply in poor condition.

Drivers wanting to head east on the turnpike are directed to head north up Route 8 to Route 910 and take that road east to the turnpike. Westbound drivers are directed to head north to Route 228, take it to I-79 South and then board the turnpike in Cranberry Township.

Drivers will still be able to get off the turnpike at the Route 8 interchange, but the on-ramps are scheduled to remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday.

The commission spokeswoman said that turned-away drivers at the Route 8 entrance would not be given a toll discount at other entrances.

The closure is expected to cause higher than usual traffic volumes along the detour routes this weekend.
