Walker keys Diamond Dawgs' victory

Cameron Walker of St. Joseph's University watches one of his two hits during the Pittsburgh Diamond Dawgs' 9-5 win Tuesday night at Pullman Park.

Cameron Walker had two singles and four stolen bases Tuesday night as the Pittsburgh Diamond Dawgs defeated the Pittsburgh Pandas, 9-5, in Tri-State Collegiate Baseball League action at Michelle Krill Memorial Field at Historic Pullman Park.

The Diamond Dawgs improved their record to 4-2 on the season after losing their first two games.

“I think all these Tri-State games are crazy, to be honest,” Diamond Dawgs coach Scott Bischke said. “We started to come around a little bit, started to hit the ball a little better. Most of these guys haven't played in a month, so we are just trying to get back into the groove.”

Aside from his offensive marks, Walker made multiple tough plays at second base, helping keep the score low early on.

“Cameron is a ballplayer, man,” Bischke said. “Put him anywhere on the field, he'll make plays defensively, but his key is getting on base because he is so quick, so he's going to have those stolen bases once he gets on.”

Jacob Seymour got the win for the Diamond Dawgs, striking out three batters and walking one through four innings. For the Pandas, Bryce Grenet took the loss with six strikeouts and three walks through three innings.

The Diamond Dawgs took an early 4-1 lead through two innings, but the Pandas fought back in the fifth with two runs to make it 4-3. But a two-run seventh and a three-run eighth would put the game away for the Diamond Dawgs.

“We didn't get some effective pitching to start, made some unforced errors out there, but it happens, you're going to have one of those games,” Pandas coach Frank Gilbert said. “We were 6-1 coming in and we got some hitting, but not timely hitting. Just sloppy overall, but you'll have that.”

Overall the Pandas struck out 11 Diamond Dawgs, put produced a lot of balls past the catcher, that resulted in Diamond Dawg runs.

“My starter didn't have the best command today,” Gilbert said. “That's a little unusual, he's a better strike thrower, just seemed to be working deep in counts too often.”

The Pandas record falls to 6-2 on the season.

The Diamond Dawgs have a date with the Butler Iron Bucks at 7 p.m. Thursday at Pullman Park.
