Grand jury hearing testimony in the investigation into former state representative from Butler County

HARRISBURG — A Dauphin County grand jury is hearing testimony from several witnesses connected to the investigation into sexual assault allegations against former State House Representative Brian Ellis.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday afternoon that the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office empanelled a grand jury earlier this month, and expects to complete testimony by early next month.

Ellis resigned his post representing the 11th District in mid-March, less than two months after District Attorney Fran Chardo opened a criminal investigation into allegations that Ellis had sex with a woman while she was incapacitated and without her consent in late October 2015 in his Harrisburg townhouse.

Ellis, a Butler Township resident, denied the allegations when the case broke in January and has declined to comment publicly on the case since then.

In his March resignation letter, Ellis cited family and his health as reasons for stepping down.
