Police discover body of woman believed to be dead for a week

Authorities said a 38-year-old woman may have been dead for a week before her body was found Tuesday at her home on the 200 block of Howard Street in Butler.

Foul play was not immediately suspected. Butler police were still trying to notify next of kin, so they have not released her name.

Police were called to the house just before 11:30 a.m. after a postal employee called 911.

“The mailman noticed an accumulation of mail,” said police Capt. Jim Hollobaugh, “and an odor coming from the residence."

Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced the woman dead in her bedroom around 12:45 p.m. She apparently lived alone.

He said there would be no autopsy due to the deteriorated condition of the body.
