Freeport lacrosse in semis

Freeport High School started a boys lacrosse team five years ago.

That team reached the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals for the first time Thursday night with a 7-6 victory over Moon.

Sean Fennel scored four goals for the Yellowjackets while Garret Schaffhauser scored two goals and one assist. Gabe Brunck had a goal and assist.

Luke Miller had two assists for Freeport. Leading the defensive effort were Hunter Turner, Josh Bollinger, Kia Sosa and Caleb Leyland, along with goalkeeper Greg Smith.

District 9 playoffs

District 9 announced matchups, sites and times for its baseball and softball playoffs.

The Karns City baseball team will take on Redbank Valley at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park in a Class AA first-round game.

Following that game will be Moniteau's clash with Cranberry in another Class AA first-round clash.

The A-C Valley softball team will host Elk County Catholic at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Class A action.

The Moniteau softball team will travel to Cranberry Monday for a 4 p.m. first pitch in a Class AA playoff game.

The Karns City softball team received a bye and won't play again until the Class AAA title game, which will be held May 29.
