Mars, Freeport lacrosse teams win, advance

Mike Doyle, Chris Sicher and Austin Cote combined to score 13 goals as Mars' boys lacrosse team steamrolled its way into the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals with a 16-1 win at home over Franklin Regional Thursday night.

Doyle led the way with five goals. Wes Scurci added four assists for Mars, which led 6-0 after one quarter.

Freeport 7, Moon 6 — No other details were available from this quarterfinal win for the Yellowjackets, who will face Mars in the semifinals on Monday.

Freeport's softball team came back twice. The Yellowjackets couldn't do it a third time.Ellwood City scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning and held on for a 14-11 WPIAL Class 3A playoff victory over Freeport Thursday at North Allegheny.The Yellowjackets (10-4) trailed 8-1 in the middle of the fifth inning before scoring three times in that frame and adding five in the sixth for a 9-8 lead.
