Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528, Brady Township, hosts Family Science Night at 6 p.m. May 22, about Green Genes: Exploring Heredity, Traits, and DNA in Nature (free but registration required by calling 724-794-6011 by May 20). “An Evening with Fireflies: Citizen Science After Dark” is scheduled for 8 p.m. June 13. Registration is limited and required by June 9 by calling 724-794-6011, or online at https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/event/an_evening_with_fireflies_citizen_science_after_dark. Cost is $10, and includes a T-shirt and firefly field guide. Proceeds benefit the Pennsylvania Firefly Festival.

Moraine State Park will have a Muddy Creek Oil Well volunteer training day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the State Parks Region 2 office, 195 Park Road. A Bartramian Audubon Society bird walk is planned for 9 a.m. to noon June 8 from the McDanel's Launch/Owlet Gift Shop parking lot on the North Shore.

McConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, off Route 422, will host a gristmill greeter volunteer training day starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. The gristmill is open 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. Tours are given at 1 and 2 p.m. Admission is free. Call 724-368-8811. Beginning Memorial Day, the mill will be open Tuesdays through Sundays, including Memorial Day and Labor Day.Star parties, sponsored by the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh, will begin about 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, weather permitting, at the Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory in Deer Lakes Regional Park near Russellton. Call 724-224-2510.
