Time to prep for Butler Road Race

It’s time for spring training. Days are longer and warmer and dressing for running outdoors is easy — shorts, shirt, shoes.

Butler County residents have a great reason to train as the 44th Annual Butler Road Race 5 Mile and 2k is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 29. The race, presented by Butler YMCA and Butler Health System, is expected to draw more than 500 participants for the dash down Main Street beginning in front of the Butler Courthouse and following the painted footprints along the race course.

The footprints are one tradition the YMCA kept when they took over race management from Butler Road Race, Inc. two years ago. Chelsy Olsen, Development Specialist at Butler Family YMCA says that they’ve tried to keep all of the traditions of the event, one of the oldest in the region. That includes keeping the same course in both the five mile and 2k distances.

The current Butler Road Race offers awards to the first five male and female finishers in the five-mile and first three in the 2k distance. Overall winners in the five-mile race also earn the Donny Bayne Award, named for one of the race’s longest and strongest supporters, the late Donny Bayne.

Top three male and female finishers in age groups from 11 and Under through 70+ also earn awards presented in Diamond Park following the race.

What has always set the Butler Road Race apart from other events of its size is its dedication to the community. Butler Family YMCA and Butler Health System are proud to be a part of this tradition. As Julie Saeler, Healthy Living Director at the Y expressed, “The race is deeply rooted in the heart of Butler. We respect that.”

Proceeds from the Butler Road Race benefit the YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign. This campaign helps “ensure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive” by participating in YMCA community programming.

The Butler YMCA directly supports community fitness by offering training opportunities and advice leading to completion of the Butler Road Race.

Beginning in May, there will be a three-mile group run for all fitness levels from walk/joggers to seasoned runners leaving from the Y at 6 a.m. on Fridays. There will also be a three-mile group run on Thursdays at 6 p.m. beginning in June.

Julie Saeler also provides training plans for anyone unsure of how to start or improve fitness in time for the road race. Her plans typically include three days of running and are tailored to each individual’s fitness starting point and goals.

For additional fitness help, Saeler — now an endurance mountain biker who ran both track and cross country in high school — can suggest other available strength, cross training, or personal training opportunites at the Butler Y. Contact Julie at jsaeler@bcfymca.org or 724-287-4733, ext. 147 to find out more about training.

At Rose Schneider Family YMCA in Cranberry Township, the Get Fit Families Dawn Crackers Running Club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. at North Boundary Park and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. at the YMCA. Kathy Hensler, Healthy Living Director at the Rose Schneider location, also conducts an eight-week Couch to 5k class series on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

For more information or to participate in the training runs or class, email Kathy at khensler@bcfymca.org or 724-452-9122, ext. 226.

Register for this year’s Butler Road Race at either YMCA or online at https://bit.ly/2CRt5ry until May 1 to take advantage of an Early Bird discount. Contact Chelsy Olsen, 724-287-4733, ext. 131 or colsen@bcfymca.org for more information.
