Man held in alleged school assault

SUMMIT TWP — A Philadelphia man is being held on $75,000 bail in connection with an alleged assault at Summit Academy.

William Shirley, 18, a student at the school, is accused of assaulting another student earlier this month. The other student, a minor, required hospital treatment as a result of the incident.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton recently arraigned Shirley on a felony charge of aggravated assault, a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and a summary charge of harassment.

State police said two other students, both juveniles, are also suspected of participating in the April 13 attack that started as an altercation in the victim's room.

Shirley allegedly punched the victim in the face. According to charging documents, the two other suspects joined Shirley in striking the victim. One of the boys is also alleged to have kicked the victim in the left eye.

Police said the victim fell into the edge of a windowsill during the assault, causing a cut above his right eye.

Shirley and the other suspects continued to strike the victim in the face and head even after the boy fell to the ground, according to the charging documents. The victim was later taken to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh with injuries. Police said the boy suffered an orbital fracture requiring surgery.

Additionally, the boy needed stitches to close the cut near his right eye. He also had swelling to his nose, ear and face.

The two other teens involved in the attack were not identified in charging documents for Shirley, and it was not immediately known if they have been charged in Butler County juvenile court in connection to the incident.

Summit Academy is a private, residential program in Herman for boys and young men, ages 14 to 19, who have committed juvenile and adult criminal offenses.

At his arraignment, Shirley told Stoughton he has been at the facility since early November 2018. The teen also disclosed he has a prior record for aggravated assault.
