Authorities release additional details in Oakland Twp. shooting death

State police continue to investigate the death of a 23-year-old man at a log cabin-style home on Davis Road across from McCullough Campground in Oakland Township.

According to authorities, the death of Maximillian W. Halterman is being investigated as a homicide. Police are releasing few details about their investigation, and would not confirm if they have a suspect at this point.

Halterman appeared to have suffered a single gunshot to his upper right shoulder, authorities said.

Officers were called to the home, where Halterman had reportedly been living, around 7:15 a.m. for a report of a man shot there. The home is about one half-mile east of Route 68.

East Butler Ambulance was also called, but later left as more criminal investigators arrived.

The coroner's office was subsequently notified. An autopsy is planned for 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Police have obtained a search warrant for the home as well as the property and any available surveillance video that could provide more clues. Investigators confirmed that Halterman died from an apparent gunshot wound and that the shooting is believed to have occurred overnight.

Halterman's friends gathered at the intersection of Route 68 and Davis Road awaiting word from authorities Wednesday morning. Halterman's distraught mother also stopped briefly to talk to friends and could be heard crying hysterically from inside her vehicle. One woman, who asked not to be identified, said she'd been friends with Halterman for 13 years.“He had a good heart,” the woman said through tears. “It was his personality. He was just bubbly. This is crazy, just crazy.”<i>We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
