Mars revises school calendar

Last day of class will be June 7

ADAMS TWP — In an effort to keep students from going to school further into June, the Mars School Board on Tuesday made changes to the school calendar to account for weather cancellations.

Superintendent Wesley Shipley told board members the district has been forced to cancel classes six times during the 2018-19 school year. The calendar accounted for five missed days, he said, making the last day of school June 10 if no changes were made.

To account for that additional missed day, a previously scheduled teacher in-service day March 25 will now be a regular day for students and teachers.

If no additional days are missed this year, the final day of school would be June 7, with June 10 becoming the teacher in-service day.

If an additional day is missed this year, district officials would ask the state to grant June 10 as an Act 80 day, making it an in-service day for teachers. Students would not need to attend class.

If two additional days are missed, the district would use April 22, the day after Easter, as an additional makeup day.

“We’re trying to avoid getting to that day,” Shipley said. “We want to keep that holiday open for families.”

If more than two additional days are missed for the remainder of the year, days will be tacked on during the week of June 10.

“Hopefully between now and the end of the year we don’t have three more snow days,” he said.

Shipley said some arrangements would need to be made for parent-teacher meetings that would be moved from the March 25 date. He did not foresee any problem, as parents of students needing extra attention would have already been in conversations with school officials.

“We’re hoping that there’s nobody getting a surprise by not having that parent-teacher conference scheduled for the spring,” he said.

The board unanimously approved the schedule changes. It will meet next at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district board office. A finance meeting at 6:30 p.m. is set before the board meeting.
