Butler woman to plead guilty to violating HIPPA

A Butler woman will plead guilty next month to charges of violating patients' privacy by obtaining and disclosing their health information, according to a federal prosecutor.

A federal grand jury in Pittsburgh indicted Linda S. Kalina, 61, with six counts of wrongfully obtaining and disclosing the health information of another individual. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carolyn J. Bloch confirmed that Kalina will plead guilty in the case during the next court appearance in March.

According to the indictment, Kalina, while employed by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and then the Allegheny Health Network, wrongfully obtained health information in violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), from March 30, 2016, through Aug. 14, 2017, relating to 111 individual patients.
