Dads, daughters cut a rug at Y's annual event

Nick Slomer and his 5-year-old daughter, Eryka, slow dance at the Butler YMCA's annual Father Daughter Dance on Saturday. About 50 fathers and their daughters participated.

Roses, cookies, pop songs and sparkly dresses filled the Butler YMCA Saturday for the organization's annual Father Daughter Dance.

About 50 fathers arrived for the dance, each of them bringing varying numbers of daughters. They've been doing the dance for more than 10 years, according to Executive Director Sandra Ihlenfeld.

“Our main goal is just to build relationships in our community,” Ihlenfeld said.

Ihlenfeld's grandchildren, Ella, 7, and Alle, 3, attended with their dad Josh Maskal. The pair of girls had rave reviews for the platters of cookies near the dance floor.

Doug Hall, 39, of Butler seemed to be having fun busting moves with his two daughters. Kaydence, 4, and Madyson, 11, even agreed to chicken dance with their father.

“We're here to dance,” Hall said. “We'll be doing some interpretive, maybe some jazz dancing.”

Hall said he and Madyson had gone to similar dances in Slippery Rock before moving to Butler. This was Kaydence's first, he said.

“We were happy to find these here when we moved,” Hall said.

Jenny Garland, a certified nurses assistant at the YMCA, greeted guests as they arrived on the dance floor.

She said many of those attending are students in their preschool programs. She was having fun seeing girls from the programs enjoying their dads.

“If you can come to things like this, be sure to bring your kid,” she said. “I think kids need to be celebrated like this.”
