Sunday afternoon snow triggers road havoc

State and local police investigate one of the dozens of crashes Sunday afternoon that occurred as a band of snow and sleet moved through Butler County.Andie Hannon/Butler Eagle

Mother Nature wreaked havoc on motorists late Sunday afternoon when a band of snow and sleet blew through the county, causing headaches for drivers and a flurry of activity for 911 dispatchers, police and emergency crews. Dozens of crashes occurred between 4 and 6 p.m., according to officials.

The first crash sent police to Interstate 79 near the 94 mile marker, where a multiple vehicle crash was reported.

About the time police determined there were no injuries and damage to the vehicles was minor, they were dispatched to another accident on the interstate in Muddy Creek Township.

When that accident scene was secured, dispatchers reported a car over an embankment in Muddy Creek Township at Perry Highway and Bauder Mill Road.
