Elementary Art Show winners announced

Elephants made by Northwest and Connoquenessing elementary school students garnered Best in Show in the Elementary School Art Show at the Butler Art Center. The exhibit of these and other sculptures, paintings, ceramics and mixed media continues through Friday.

The awards ceremony for the Elementary School Art Show at the Butler Art Center on Friday included ribbons in extra categories and 10 honorable mentions.

Gallery director Stephen Haley said the awards were added because of the high quality of the work. “The kids exceeded everybody's expectations,” Haley said.

Receiving honorable mentions were:

Aayla Shorr, “Mark”

Lucas Szul, “Lion”

Braylynn Thompson, “Tree Divided”

Students from Sugarcreek Elementary, “Ink and Watercolor Drawings”

Ryan Orsborn, “Vampire”

Collin Richey, “Blue Jay”

Miles Lavery, “The Misadventures of Metabolism Man and Carrot Kid”

Amelia Borek, “Deviled Eggs.”

Another unusual part of the awards ceremony was the Best in Show winner: all of Gretchen Lavery's students at Northwest and Connoquenessing elementary schools who made “Elephants.”
