Call anti-Semitism what it is, don't expect it to stop suddenly

Properly slammed by House leaders of both parties for trafficking in the most insidious stereotypes, freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat, now says “I unequivocally apologize,” as “Anti-Semitism is real.”

You bet it is, both here and abroad, and Omar has been using her new position in Congress to pour on the gasoline.

She is the one who in 2012 tweeted that “Israel has hypnotized the world,” spreading the poisonous notion, popular among the David Dukes of the world, that a Zionist cabal is pulling strings behind the scenes.

She is the one who, alongside fellow freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib and a scarily growing number of young progressives, supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement to single out and delegitimize Israel, the Mideast’s only true democracy.

And she is the one who said support for Israel among her colleagues is “all about the Benjamins, baby,” charging that Jewish money is controlling Congress. When urged to clarify what she meant, she answered that the problem is “AIPAC!” — pointing the finger at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee — but may as well have said “the media and the banks.”

We welcome Omar’s contritition, but it would be hopelessly naive to believe that anyone with such a consistent record of blaming Israel for all the Mideast’s woes, and calling Jewish influence on our politics corrosive, is prepared to learn how to stop salting wounds and start healing them.
