WPIAL playoffs should be wild ride

Get ready for a wild few weeks of basketball.

Butler County will have 12 high school teams involved in the WPIAL playoffs. Those teams will learn their first-round opponents at the pairings meeting Tuesday night in Green Tree.

Four county teams — North Catholic’s boys and girls, Mars boys and Knoch boys — earned at least a share of section championships this season.

The Trojans and Trojanettes have been dominant more often than not and have a distinct possibility of bringing home two WPIAL crowns. North Catholic’s boys are 16-3 overall, 10-1 in section play, and are outscoring opponents by an average margin of 21 points.

The Trojanettes are 19-2 overall, 14-0 in section play, and are outscoring their opponents on average by the incredible margin of 34 points.

One of the most intriguing stories of this high school hoop season has been Knoch. The Knights are co-section champions with Highlands in Class 4A.

Knoch won all of one section game last season, though it was in Class 5A a year ago. The Knights were 7-14 overall, 1-11 in Section 2-5A.

This year, they are 15-5 overall, 9-1 in section competition.

When Robby Carmody left for Notre Dame this year, the quality of the Planets’ boys basketball team didn’t leave with him. Mars is 20-1 overall this season and is outscoring opponents by 21 points per game.

Three county teams — Butler’s boys, Summit Academy’s boys and Freeport’s girls — have at least tied for second in their respective sections this season.

The Golden Tornado have had an interesting season. Everyone knows about their scoring prowess — Butler has a bunch of players who can drain the 3-pointers and Ethan Morton snapped the program’s career scoring record Friday night.

That record stood for 25 years and Morton is only a junior.

Butler is 15-4 overall and its only two section losses are to Pine-Richland. The Tornado average 74.4 points per game. Only Pine-Richland, North Catholic, Our Lady of Sacred Heart and Cornell average more in the entire WPIAL.

Problem is, Butler allows 68.8 points per game. Only small schools Bentworth and Mapletown are allowing more in the WPIAL — and those teams are a combined 1-40 this season.

Butler does play a fast-paced style which lends itself toward higher-scoring games. But the Tornado defense will have to improve for the team to make a serious postseason run.

Summit Academy’s boys are 9-4 in section play and has had good teams before. This team is one that nobody in Class 2A wants to play.

Freeport’s girls are 16-4 this year with two of those losses coming to North Catholic. Mars girls finished third in its section, but allows only 45 points per game.

Buckle your seat belts.

This may be a wild ride.
