SLIPPERY ROCK — The drought has ended.

Slippery Rock University’s women’s basketball team had dropped 35 consecutive games to California (Pa.) — dating back to the 2001-02 season — before stunning the 10th-ranked Vulcans, 72-61, Saturday at Morrow Field House.

With the win, SRU (9-11, 7-7) moves into a three-way tie for fourth place in the PSAC West with seven conference games remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the PSAC Tournament.

Brooke Hinderliter led The Rock with 27 points, adding eight rebounds and three steals. She was 13-for-13 at the free throw line.

Madison Johnson came off the bench to score 19 points and grab 10 rebounds. Karns City graduate LeeAnn Gibson and Daeja Quick scored 10 points each.

The Rock held California (18-2, 12-2) to a season-low 61 points. Hinderliter and Johnson combined to sink all 12 of their free throws in the final two minutes.

SRU travels to Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday.

Men

SRU 91, California 71 — The Rock (15-6, 12-2) led wire to wire in bouncing back from its loss Wednesday at Gannon.

The victory sets up a showdown for first place in the PSAC West this Wednesday when SRU travels to fourth-ranked Indiana (Pa.) .

Micah Till pasced The Rock with 25 points and 13 rebounds. He blocked six shots as well. Jared Armstrong had 16 points, including four treys, while Jason Fowlkes scored 11 points.

Butler County Community College 100, Penn Highlands 97 — The Pioneers (8-11, 5-0) trailed 51-50 at halftime before securing home advantage throughout the Western Pa. Collegiate Conference playoffs with the win.

Joel Stutz scored 37 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for BC3. Josh Knochel scored 25 points, Jace Stutz had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Jordan Sager 11 points.

BC3 hosts Pitt-Titusville Monday. The women’s game is at 5 p.m., the men’s game at 7 p.m.
