Attic fire knocked down at SR Twp. home

Firefighters from Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company, assisted by surrounding departments, responded to an attic fire on New Castle Road on Monday.

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — A midday attic fire Monday brought Slippery Rock firefighters to 640 New Castle Road.

Firefighters from Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding departments arrived to find heavy smoke but no visible flames.

Slippery Rock Fire Chief Ryan Hanchosky said the fire started in the attic and was contained there. He said there was no one home at the time.

Hanchosky said he was glad to finish putting out the fire in less than ideal weather.

“Weather conditions were pretty tough for us,” Hanchosky said. “Stuff was freezing up.”

Crews combatted the smoke for a little more than an hour.

Hanchosky said the work was quicker than it could have been, even with delays.

“It was a fast knock down,” he said. “We were really out the door fast.”

The state police fire marshal was called.

Unionville and Harrisville fire departments assisted with the call. Scott Township, Springfield Township, Pine Township and Grove City fire departments, all from Lawrence County, also assisted.
