That's not birth control

Regarding the Associated Press report “Pennsylvania sued over limits on abortion coverage” (Jan. 17, page 5), abortion activists want taxpayer dollars to fund abortion on demand for any reason at all. This flies in the face of all pro-life and even many pro-abortion taxpayers who may accept rape, incest and the life of the woman as valid exceptions but balk at paying for abortion as a form of birth control.

Yes, the law has evolved and so has our understanding of genetics where we can say that from the moment of conception on we have a new and unique human life. Send DNA to a lab and it will come back as human and unique and we already know it is alive. Terminating a pregnancy is the ending of such a life, ending all of its potential and knowing that the life you end can never be recreated.

The “choice” in pro-choice should mean the choice to conceive or not. It should not mean to kill or not kill. Birth control — surgical, pharmaceutical or by implant, condom or abstinence — is commonly available. The state’s stance is reasonable and reflects the feelings of taxpaying citizens. Men and women need to be responsible for their behavior and the prevention of pregnancy where it is unwanted should be a matter of avoiding pregnancy, not killing a living being.

We seem to live in a society that does not want to teach personal responsibility or accountability to anyone for anything. We need to teach that good and responsible actions have positive consequences and negative or irresponsible actions may come with negative consequences. Anything less should be unacceptable, just as unnecessary killing should be unacceptable.
