An armored bank truck caught on fire while driving on Lindsay Road in Jackson Township at about 4 p.m. Thursday. The truck's driver and the money are both safe.

JACKSON TWP — An armored bank truck caught on fire Thursday, snarling traffic during the evening commute.

The incident happened on Lindsay Road at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday when the vehicle began smoking in the engine compartment. Units from Evans City and Harmony fire departments responded.

Harmony Fire District Chief Scott Garing said the fire started from a small issue in the engine compartment, which progressed into the passenger compartment. The truck’s driver pulled off the road and was not injured in the incident.

While the cab of the truck was damaged, “all the money inside was safe,” Garing said.

Garing said he did not have information regarding from where the truck was coming or where it was going, but it did contain a “day’s worth of pickups from businesses.”

Police and armed guards who also responded to the call focused on protecting the truck’s contents after the fire was out and awaited a new armored truck to make the pick up.

Traffic was delayed about an hour while emergency responders put out the fire. A single lane of traffic was maintained while waiting for the money to be transferred to a second bank truck before the damaged truck was towed.
