Raider matmen perfect in section

Seneca Valley tops Pine-Richland, 59-13

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley wrestling team isn't going to sneak up on anyone this time around.

And neither is Alejandro Herrera-Rondon.

The Raiders and their best wrestler have a mat-sized target on their backs heading into the WPIAL 3A team playoffs, which begin next week.

Seneca Valley wrapped up the dual meet schedule at home Wednesday night with a dominating 59-13 win over Pine-Richland.

“Last year we joked about no one knowing about us,” said Seneca Valley coach Kevin Wildrick. “This year the secret is out a little bit about us. We need to bring our best every night.”

Everyone, it seems, is bringing his best against Herrera-Rondon.

The sophomore, who won the PIAA championship at 106 pounds last season and who has spent much of this campaign at 113, wrestled up at 120 against the Rams.

There, he took on Kelin Laffey, who is ranked No. 5 in the WPIAL and 17th in the state in that weight class.

Herrera-Rondon is ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL and state and is the top wrestler in the nation at 113 pounds, according to FloWrestling.org.

After scoring four quick points, Herrera-Rondon found himself in a tussle, eventually winning 6-1.

“The good and the bad of having the joy of those rankings on you is you have a bull's-eye on you, too,” Wildrick said. “Everyone who has guts in wrestling is going to be coming after you. There's no light matches no matter who you're wrestling.

“Everyone wants the chance to knock you off. He has to keep working hard and keep working at separating himself and getting into his offense a little bit more. He'll get there.”

Herrera-Rondon will be wrestling at 120 pounds during the team tournament to open up slots for Hunter Swedish at 106 and Dylan Chappell at 113.

Chappel is ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL and the state and No. 20 nationally.

“Team-wise it makes more sense,” Wildrick said of shuffling Herrera-Rondon to 120. “When (Chappell and Herrera-Rondon) are both down, it bumps a really good guy out of the lineup.”

Seneca Valley received four pins against Pine-Richland (7-3, 2-3), one coming in just 19 seconds by Jason Geyer at 132 pounds.

The Raiders also received four forfeit wins.

For first-year Pine-Richland coach Caleb Kolb, son of former Pittsburgh Steeler offensive lineman Jon Kolb and a Grove City High School graduate, having four empty weight classes has been a burden.

Still, Kolb has seen a lot of good things.

“Our guys have more takedowns this year than they had all of last season,” Kolb said.

Kolb won a PIAA championship at 171 pounds during his senior year at Grove City in 2009 and went on to wrestle at Nebraska.

He got a pin from his heavyweight, Miguel Jackson, and a 10-1 major decision from Cole Spencer at 160.

“We're just trusting the process,” Kolb said. “Our first match, we got beaten pretty badly by Butler, but then we won seven straight.”

But a loss to Armstrong last week ended the Rams' hopes of a spot in the team playoffs.

No such problem for Seneca Valley (8-2, 5-0), which will host the first round Wednesday.

“I'm happy overall with our effort,” Wildrick said. “We just have to make sure we're all fighting hard together every single match. It doesn't matter who we're wrestling, we're trying to get better for the next match.”
