Recital series offers duo, trio performances

The cellist Katya Janpoladyan is to perform along with pianist Nancy DeSalvo and violinist Tanya Satteson on Saturday in Zelienople.

In its second year, the Butler County Recital Series has grown to include a third musician for its second concert of the season.

“An Evening of Chamber Music” will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday in Zelienople.

“As we grow, I hope we can have more (musicians) in future,” said series founder Tanya Satteson, a violinist and concertmaster of the Butler County Symphony Orchestra.

“We were really just getting established in the community last year,” Satteson said, “and we've grown a little this season.”

She said the two concerts last year attracted about 50 people, and the performance in the fall saw more than 60 concertgoers.

The venue, St. Peter's Reformed Church, could hold 200 to 250, Satteson said.

“It's a great location with good access to (Interstate) 79 and (Route) 19,” she said. “That's been really good for us.”

The recital series aims to share classical solo and chamber repertoire with the community through regular performances.

Performing along with Satteson on Saturday will be pianist Nancy DeSalvo, and for the first time, cellist Katya Janpoladyan.

They will play duos and trios by Handel-Halvorsen, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Piazzolla.

Mendelssohn's Piano Trio is probably one of the most famous pieces, Satteson said.

“Our audiences tend to like classical music but might not know a whole lot about it. We change up the combinations of instruments with duos and trios. We're ending with a tango,” she said.

Satteson, a resident of Cranberry Township and a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, has performed across Canada and the United States.

DeSalvo, an associate professor at Westminster College, is an acclaimed pianist and collaborative artist. She performs extensively across the United States and is the pianist of the Amici Trio.

The newest addition, cellist Janpoladyan, has spearheaded several successful chamber music programs.

She is the founder, executive director, and cellist of Kassia Ensemble. She is a former member of the Baur String Quartet and the Shell Piano Trio of Armenia, which in 2001, while she was a member, won the 2001 Pierre Lantier International Chamber Music Competition in Paris.

In the event of a winter storm on Saturday, the concert will be rescheduled to the next Saturday, Jan. 26, at the same time, 7 p.m.

Satteson said she will post information about any postponement on the website by 4 p.m. Saturday, or maybe earlier depending on the extent of the snowfall, because the pianist drives here from Ohio.
