Boy, 11, killed in tragic accident

An 11-year-old boy died and two children were injured after being hit by a car Monday morning at a school bus stop in Summit Township, according to authorities. One of the children was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital and the other was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
2 siblings also hurt while at bus stop

SUMMIT TWP — An 11-year-old boy was killed and his two siblings were injured Monday morning when a vehicle struck them at the bus stop in front of their home on Geibel Road, authorities said.

The children were waiting for the bus to take them to Summit Elementary School at about 8:50 a.m. when they were hit.

Authorities said the boy was pronounced dead at Butler Memorial Hospital. An autopsy was expected to be performed later Monday.

His 6-year-old brother, police said, was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh with unknown injuries. Their 9-year-old sister was taken to BMH with an apparent minor ankle injury.

An accident reconstruction team was still at the scene after noon, said police Cpl. Greg Bogan.

Police did not release the names of the children.

Police identified the driver as Gina Kibbie, 38, of Butler in a news release Monday evening. Both Kibbie and a 7-year-old boy in her car were uninjured.

Kibbie is an employee of the district, a district spokesperson confirmed Monday night. School board personnel reports from August 2017 list her hire as a paraprofessional at Summit Elementary School.

Kibbie stopped her vehicle after the accident, Bogan said.

Police said Kibbie told them she did not see the children.

Butler School District Superintendent Brian White Jr., in a letter sent to parents, expressed “great sadness” in reporting the accident.

“When our school community experiences a tragedy, such as the loss of a young life, it impacts all of us,” White said in the letter. “My thoughts and prayers are with the students and their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

He encouraged parents to “take some time (Monday night) to talk to your child” about what happened.

He said the district made available Monday additional grief counselors for any elementary students at Summit in need. Counselors also were available at other district schools.

Additionally, the district noted that the regularly scheduled school board meeting Monday night was canceled in wake of the day's events. School board president Nina Teff said the board will either reschedule the meeting or move its planned business to the Jan. 28 meeting.

“For myself and for fellow school board members, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and with emergency personnel,” Teff said.

Rob McLafferty, chief of the Herman Volunteer Fire Company, said emergency crews were sent for an initial call of a car that reportedly struck a pedestrian at Geibel Road and Pine Drive.

He said it was determined that three children were struck at the bus stop. He declined further comment about the accident.

Bogan said he did not believe road conditions were a factor in the accident. It was not known if weather may have contributed to it.

Lick Hill volunteer firefighters assisted by setting up a landing area for a STAT MedEvac helicopter at the Herman fire station on the 700 block of Herman Road.

East Butler Ambulance and Butler Ambulance Service crews also were called.

A neighbor reportedly heard someone screaming from the scene. The neighbor said she was too shaken and declined to comment.

Several other residents on the road near the intersection said they were unaware of the accident immediately after it happened.

Kibbie was driving west on Pine Drive when the accident occurred, according to a police news release.

Eagle staff writers Tanner Cole and Paula Grubbs contributed to this report.
