Jumpers shine for Golden Tornado
It was a good weekend for Butler High School jumpers.
On Friday at the Slippery Rock Indoor High School Invitational, Alexia Mechling won the girls high jump by clearing 5 feet, 5 inches.
Also Friday at Slippery Rock, Jack Codispot won the boys pole vault with an effort of 14 feet.
Andrew Klein cleared 13 feet in the pole vault to finish second for the Golden Tornado.
Tristian McGarrah and Mitchell Wong also placed in the pole vault for Butler.
On Saturday at the Edinboro TSTCA meet, Sami Taoufik placed first in the high jump at 6-4.
Mechling's effort Friday is good enough for fourth in the state.
It was also a pretty good weekend for Butler's relay teams.
The girls 800-meter relay team of Emma Stewart, Liz Simms, Chesna Tomko and Gabby Boden placed first with a time of 1 minute, 48.90 seconds.
The girls 1,600-meter relay of Boden, Simms, Anna Baxter and Tomko also placed first with a time of 4:14.33.

The Slippery Rock High indoor track and field team had several athletes place at the Spire indoor meet Saturday.
Gordon Baker was third in the high jump at 5-8. Sean Northcott was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 44-5¾, Pat Shea was sixth in the long jump (18-9) and Kristian Sosa was eighth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:52.98 for the boys.
Alyssa Dalmagro was third in the shot put for the Rockets' girls with a throw of 31-9¼.
Wrestling
Nick Schockowitsch came from 4-0 down and tied his 106-pound match against St. Clairsville with a reversal and a near fall to force overtime, where he got a takedown for the sudden victory to highlight the day for Butler at the Southside Duals Saturday.
The Golden Tornado went 4-1 in the round-robin format, only losing to eventual champion St. Clairsville.
Schockowitsch went 5-0 on the day.
Steven Green also went a perfect 5-0 in his matches at 145 pounds.
Nate McDonald and Nate McMaster each went 4-1 with four pins for Butler (8-2).
The Golden Tornado earned a 54-21 win over Penn Cambria, a 63-18 victory over Independence, a 66-18 win over Laurel and a 64-12 rout of Sharon before losing to St. Clairsville 39-27.
Girls Basketball
Emma McDermott scored 12 points and Hallie Raabe added 11 as Slippery Rock jumped out to a 24-3 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 57-30 win over Farrell.
Anna Kadlubek added nine points for Slippery Rock (9-3).
