Lucky mother, daughter win musical spot

Abby Cavanaugh and her mom, Lori, attend “Hamilton” Thursday in Pittsburgh after winning a lottery to buy $10 tickets to the hit musical.

A few hours after Abby Cavanaugh of Renfrew got word that she and her mom, Lori, had won a lottery to buy $10 tickets to “Hamilton” in Pittsburgh, she was still breathlessly excited about it.

“I have loved the show since it came out,” the 17-year-old Butler High School senior said Wednesday afternoon.

The smash hit musical opened on Broadway in 2015 and began a national tour last year.

“We entered the lottery for the past couple of days, and we weren’t getting it and we weren’t getting it, and then today I found out we won,” she said. “I was in school. About 11:30 a.m., an email came that we won. I also got a text.”

The email started out “Congratulations Lori,” Abby said, because lottery entrants must be 18 years of age, so her mother actually won the tickets.

But it’s Abby who is the big “Hamilton” fan.

“I went to New York last year to see his grave and (his wife) Eliza’s grave. I went to D.C. to check out the Treasury because that was his big thing,” she said.

Her favorite song from the musical is “Non-Stop,” the act one finale, she said.

“It’s the one where everyone is kind of singing at the same time,” Abby said. “It really just shows how Hamilton is always being shouted at by someone.”

Mom and daughter attended the show Thursday evening at the Benedum Center.

“We got the box office two hours early to pick up the tickets, and they were in the front row!” Abby said, still breathless. “We could see everything. It was just amazing. The whole cast was amazing.”

And how did her favorite song sound live on stage?

“It was fantastic. It blew me away,” she said of “Non-Stop.” “When the last line was delivered and the lights went black ... it was just like I imagined it would be.”

And that was just the first act.

“The second act was very emotional,” Abby said. “My mom and I both cried.”

Abby said she could envision the show because she listens to the music so much and also has a book with pictures from each song.

“My mom loved it too,” Abby said. “She had heard a few songs because I play it all the time.”

Lori Cavanaugh said she also loved the show.

“I’ve had the privilege of seeing a lot of musicals over the years and this, I think, definitely is the best one,” her mother said. “It’s so well-written, and the music really flowed. I expected an act where it got a little boring or slowed down a bit — that never happened.”

Attempts to get tickets to “Hamilton” in other cities, including New York, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, didn’t work out.

“This was the opportunity of a lifetime,” Lori Cavanaugh said. “We’re so grateful.”

Abby, who is enthusiastic about all things musical theater, just this week started rehearsal for the Butler High School production of “Cinderella.”

“I’m in the women’s gold ensemble, so I will be in the ball and the wedding,” Abby said.

Although her plans don’t include majoring in musical theater at college — she is set to study Homeland Security at Slippery Rock University in the fall — she hopes to continue participating in theater shows in the community.
