Butler Police11:35 p.m. Wednesday — Elizabeth Monaco, 37, of Butler was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence following a two-vehicle, hit-and-run crash in the 400 block of West Pearl Street.No one was injured. A police news release did not identify the other driver.Police said they eventually identified Monaco, who is facing charges of DUI and hit and run.Wednesday — Walter L. Lewis, 56, of Butler was charged with taking a tip jar last month from a pizza shop on West Cunningham Street.A manager at Papa Johns told police that a man, later identified as Lewis, came into the shop Dec. 11 shortly after it opened, according to court documents.The man stood at the front counter talking to the manager as she performed her duties and got the business ready to open. He eventually left, documents said, but it wasn’t until later that the manager noticed the employees’ tip jar missing from the front counter.Police reviewed surveillance video and an officer from past incidents allegedly recognized Lewis as the thief. The footage showed the defendant take the jar and place it under his jacket before leaving, documents said.The tip jar contained $27.37.Lewis is charged with a third-degree misdemeanor count of theft.

Harrisville Police11:29 p.m. Dec. 21 — Jacqueline D. McDougall, 22, of Slippery Rock was found driving a pickup truck with an inactive license plate and an altered inspection sticker at Browntown Road and Route 8.Police said McDougall, after being pulled over, acknowledged that she knew the truck was not legal to be on the road.She is charged with misdemeanor counts of altered, forged or counterfeit documents and plates, and possession or use of a certificate of title, registration card or plate, driver’s license, inspection certificate, proof of financial responsibility or any other document knowing it to have been altered, forged or counterfeited.

State Police, Butler4:30 p.m. Dec. 28 — A West Virginia woman was arrested for felony shoplifting after she allegedly tried to steal a coat, valued at $160, at the Boscov’s store at the Clearview Mall in Center Township.Crystal M. Drake, 34, of Ivydale was arraigned on a felony count of retail theft and later released on $2,500 unsecured bail. Court records show that she has at least three prior shoplifting convictions in Pennsylvania.Under state law, retail theft is normally a summary or misdemeanor offense. But it is upgraded to a third-degree felony regardless of the stolen property’s value when a suspect has at least two or more prior convictions for the same crime.Dec. 28 — Police obtained an arrest warrant for an Armstrong County man charged with illegally attempting to buy a handgun in August at a Center Township store.The defendant, Ronald A. Miller Jr., 45, of Worthington, is accused of providing false information on a federal form that was required Aug. 3 when he tried to buy a 9 mm pistol at the Clearview Mall Rural King, according to court documents.Police said when his information was entered into the Pennsylvania Instant Check system, an automated system by which gun dealers can determine if someone can legally buy a gun in the state, he was denied the purchase.Miller is charged with unlawfully attempting to buy a firearm, a felony, and unsworn falsification to authorities, a misdemeanor.Dec. 28 — Matthew J. Hromyak, 22, of New Castle was charged with being more than two-and-a-half times the state’s legal limit for alcohol stemming from an October traffic stop on South Main Street in Slippery Rock.Hromyak was pulled over shortly after 11:30 p.m. Oct. 13, police said, for having a faulty headlight. He admitted to drinking “a little” before being stopped, according to court documents.He subsequently failed field sobriety testing and was taken to the Slippery Rock police station for a breath test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.213 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.Hromyak is charged with driving under the influence, careless driving and a lighting violation.Dec. 28 — Samantha R. Eppinger, 21, of Slippery Rock was charged with taking a small amount of money from a cash register at the Prospect Corner Store on Main Street in Prospect. Police said she took a total of $27 on six occasions between Nov. 10 and Dec. 12.She is charged with a third-degree misdemeanor count of theft.Dec. 20 — Police charged Ronald G. Grimes, 28, of Emlenton with drunken driving stemming from a traffic stop earlier in the month in Brady Township. Troopers stopped him Dec. 1 after he failed to use his turn signal at Hall Road and Lilac Lane.Grimes admitted that he was coming from a local bar, according to court documents, where he had three beers.He showed impairment during field sobriety tests and was taken for a breath test that determined his blood-alcohol level was 0.14 percent.A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.In addition to driving under the influence, he is charged with not using turn signals and a rear-light violation.
