Cranberry man pleads to possession of marijuana

Search warrants turn up more

YOUNGWOOD, Westmoreland County — A Cranberry Township man arrested earlier this year for transporting 75 pounds of marijuana pleaded guilty to a possession charge last month.

Guovanni O. Baassiri, 34, originally was charged with felony manufacturing, delivering or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver marijuana and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance as a result of a June traffic stop.

On Nov. 28, Baassiri pleaded guilty to the manufacturing or delivery charge as well as a use or possession charge in Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court before Judge Timothy Krieger, according to court documents, which indicated that the charges were merged and a plea deal was negotiated.

Baassiri was sentenced to a maximum of two years of probation and must pay court costs, according to documents.

According to the complaint, officers made a traffic stop on Route 119 north in Youngwood after seeing a vehicle fail to signal a lane change and follow another vehicle too closely. Officers said they smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, which was driven by Baassiri. He told officers there was nothing in the vehicle, and would not consent to a search, the complaint states. A K9 unit called to the scene alerted officers to something in the vehicle, police said.

There they found two large cardboard boxes containing marijuana. According to a report filed by the Westmoreland County-Greensburg post of the state police, 75 pounds of marijuana was inside of the vehicle. That amount is estimated to be worth $150,000, according to the report.

Law enforcement officials subsequently secured two search warrants for homes in Pittsburgh and on Glenwood Court in Cranberry Township. They allegedly found 50 pounds of THC Shatter, which is a concentrated cannabis extract. The report estimates the drug's value at $240,000.
