Fundraiser for dog-mauling victim a success

Friends of a Brady Township woman held a charity event Sunday to help her recover from a dog mauling she suffered earlier this month.

Friends describe Connie Matthews LeGrand as a giving person. On Dec. 2 she was visiting neighbors at the Brady Hills Home Park to see if they wanted a sofa and a vacuum cleaner. When she arrived, three St. Bernard dogs clawed and mauled her, ripping part of her scalp off her skull, which required 33 staples for reattachment at Butler Memorial Hospital, according to an earlier report.

LeGrand wasn’t admitted to the hospital but since the attack, her friends reported that she has been visiting doctors regularly to deal with the pain and aftermath of the attack. Her childhood friend, Diane Craig, organized the Bar Bingo Benefit on Sunday at the Beer Garden Sports Bar and Grille on Oneida Valley Road in Washington Township to raise money for LeGrand, who has been unable to work since the attack, according to Craig.

Craig came up with the idea for the fundraiser and through word of mouth and social media she was able to collect 122 donations filled with various goods for a raffle auction, which they called a Chinese auction.

Craig estimated that about 250 to 300 people showed up throughout the day, with many either giving a donation or buying raffle tickets.
