Police: Man hits police car with stolen vehicle after chase

Tyler Kern of Clearfield Township, charged with hitting cruiser while leading police on chase in Butler Township.

BUTLER TWP — A man is accused of hitting a township officer’s cruiser Sunday afternoon during a police pursuit in a stolen sport utility vehicle, authorities said.

Police suspect two days earlier, Tyler B. Kern, 25, of Clearfield Township led officers on a chase in the same vehicle on Route 422 in Butler Township.

A Butler police officer responding to the earlier chase collided with another vehicle at Main and Brady streets, city police said.

Butler Township police said their department and Butler police were already looking for Kern when they were called for a reported shoplifting incident at Walmart at the Butler Commons shopping plaza.

Kern was arrested after he clipped a police vehicle and crashed the stolen Honda CR-V into rock and a utility pole shortly after 2:30 p.m while trying to get away from police.

He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with an apparent minor injury.

Kern was later released and arraigned on 20 charges including five felonies.

He is in the Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail.
