[naviga:h3]Karns City, Butler win cheering event[/naviga:h3]

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau hosted a competitive cheerleading event Saturday which saw Karns City and Butler win their respective divisions.

Butler won the co-ed division with 82 points, beating out Keystone and Clarion-Limestone. Karns City won the large varsity division with 72.33 points, beating out Laurel and Neshannock.

St. Malachy scored 72.10 in winning the junior high division. Moniteau’s varsity, middle school, elementary and mini competitive cheer programs performed exhibitions.

[naviga:h3]SRU’s Gaviglia, Hills named All-American[/naviga:h3]

SLIPPERY ROCK — Seneca Valley graduate and Slippery Rock University senior right tackle Steve Gaviglia, and running back Wes Hills, have been named second team Division II All-America by The Associated Press.

Gaviglia was also named second team All-America by the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association Wednesday.

Hills, from Wildwood, N.J., rushed for a single-season Rock record 1,714 yards this year, topping 150 yards in six games.

[naviga:h3]BC3 hoops split with Mercyhurst NE[/naviga:h3]

BUTLER TWP — Joel Stutz scored 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Butler County Community College men’s basketball team edged Mercyhurst NE, 104-100, recently.

Jace Stutz scored 24 points, Andrew Yonker 17, Josh Knochel 13 and Jordan Sager 10 for the Pioneers (3-5).

The Pioneer women (2-6) dropped an 80-53 decision. Mackenzie Craig had 25 points and 19 rebounds, Carly Burdett and Casey Kretzer 11 points each.
