Transit authority awards CNG contract

BUTLER TWP — The Butler Transit Authority on Tuesday awarded a contract for providing compressed natural gas for its fleet of buses contingent upon the contractor submitting paperwork that was left out of its proposal.

Authority board members unanimously voted to award the contract to Mid Atlantic Energy Services of Morgantown, W.Va., to provide CNG for $3.30 per thousand cubic feet (MCF).

The company's proposal, the only one the authority received, was missing a couple documents not related to the price of the CNG. The company will have to submit them before the contract is officially awarded, said Rebecca Black, authority solicitor.

The contract covers one year and includes options for three more years, she said.

Currently, the authority is paying $3.33 per MCF in addition to the $7,500 monthly lease for a temporary CNG fueling station to fuel buses.

The authority has built a permanent fueling station, but hasn't tested it yet. A test scheduled Dec. 18 was postponed and a new date hasn't been set.

Three of the authority's local service buses and all five commuter buses run on compressed natural gas. Three more gas-powered local service buses are scheduled to go into service by April.

The trolley bus, which runs local service routes, will be the only diesel- powered bus in the fleet.

The authority also approved its 2019 monthly meeting schedule in which most meetings take place on the second Tuesday in the authority office on Hollywood Drive in Pullman Square.

The December meeting will be held at the Butler County Country Club. Meetings will be held on the third Tuesday in May, July, August and September. The April meeting is on the 30th. All meetings begin at 5 p.m.
