Comtra brings 'A Christmas Story' to Cranberry stage

Brett Barthelemy of Baden is Ralphie, center, and Ralphie's parents are played by Roland Hess of Wexford and Veronica Mortier of Cranberry Township in Comtra Theatre's “A Christmas Story, The Musical.” The play based on the movie opens Friday.

CRANBERRY TWP — “A Christmas Story: The Musical,” based on the film many know and love but with a musical flair, will run Friday through Dec. 22 at the Comtra Theatre.

This play, based on the 1983 film, is set in the fictional town of Hohman, Ind., during the 1940s.

The story follows Ralphie Parker and all the wild and crazy efforts in his quest for a Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot Range Model air rifle.

All the iconic scenes from the movie are in this show: Ralphie's friend, Flick, getting his tongue stuck to the flagpole; his brother, Randy, getting dressed in his snowsuit; the bullies, Farkus and Dill; the leg lamp award; the bunny suit; the Chinese restaurant; and many others.

The versatile score ranges from gentle ballads to show-stopping full-ensemble numbers such as “A Major Award,” “Sticky Situation,” “Up on Santa's Lap,” “Somewhere Hovering Over Indiana” and the inevitable “You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!”

Curtain will be at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 22, along with a matinee at 2 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Comtra, 20540 Route 19.

Tickets are $15, available at comtratheatre.org/box-office. Some shows are sold out.
