SLIPPERY ROCK — Sharon held the potent Grove City High offense to just 225 yards and built a 23-0 lead in the fourth quarter on the way to an upset 23-6 win over the Eagles in the District 10 3A championship game Friday night at Slippery Rock University.

Jordan Wilson rushed for 130 yards on 31 carries for Sharon, which led 9-0 at the half and 17-0 after three quarters in handing Grove City (11-1) its first loss of the season.

The Eagles were held to just 72 yards rushing by the Tigers.

[naviga:h3]Pens’ Cullen fined for dangerous trip[/naviga:h3]

NEW YORK — Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cullen has been fined $1,000 by the NHL for a dangerous trip of Tampa Bay Lightning forward J.T. Miller.

The infraction came during the first period of Thursday night’s game, a 4-3 victory by Tampa Bay. Cullen was assessed a minor penalty for tripping.

In announcing the fine, the league said Friday the money will go the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

[naviga:h3]Pearce signs 1-year deal with Red Sox[/naviga:h3]

BOSTON — World Series MVP Steve Pearce is staying with the Red Sox.

The journeyman first baseman agreed to a $6.25 million, one-year contract with Boston on Friday.

The 35-year-old Pearce was a free agent after completing a $12.5 million, two-year deal that he got from Toronto in December 2016.
