Karns City to host D9 title games

After ice and snow rendered several high school and college football fields in District 9 unplayable for 1A and 2A title games, Karns City stepped into the breach.

The school will host both games Monday with the 1A championship game between Coudersport and Smethport scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. followed by the 2A clash between Ridgway and Brockway at 7 p.m.

The district was in a bind because of Winter Storm Avery, which dumped a layer of ice beneath a heavy layer of snow.

The ice became the issue as schools could not safely plow their fields without damaging the playing surface.

District 9 football chairman Bob Tonkin spent 12 hours Friday trying to find a site of the games, which were originally scheduled for Friday night with the 1A game slated for Bradford and the 2A game for DuBois.

After a scramble Friday to find a site for the games, Karns City stepped up and offered its field Monday.

The Karns City Gremlin Football Facebook page sent out a message Friday night for help in clearing the field Saturday.

“This is a call for all hands on deck assistance tomorrow! District 9 wants to use our field on Monday for a doubleheader play football game — Class A and AA championships,” the post read. “They need the field cleared off to see if it's playable (no ice). So we are calling for anyone...football players (you can earn 'Gremlin points' for helping), students, parents, fans, etc that can help on Saturday @ 2:00 on the stadium field to shovel snow so bring your shovels!”
