Neighborhood roadtrip: chainsaws required

PENN TWP — Traveling Crisswell Road Friday was an adventure. It was an experience for the eyes — and the nerves.

Images of newly fallen and untouched snow on trees and landscapes were a sight to behold.

But looking away from the road was risky. Much of the long, winding road was littered with shattered tree trunks and branches.

More troubling was the occasional power line dangling precariously overhead, barely above car roof level. Some lines were on the road, looking like oversized snakes.

A pair of sawhorses and a lawn chair were used to mark the closing of the road in the 500 block, where lines were draped across the entire way.

Homeowners were bustling with activity: shoveling driveways, playing with dogs and children, and utilizing chainsaws to cut up fallen trees on their properties.

Paul Walter, who lives on the 400 block of Crisswell Road, demonstrated good citizenship. Joining him were his two Eagle Scout sons, ages 18 and 21, Mitchell and Matthew, who fulfilled the Boy Scout promise of being helpful.

“We grabbed a few chainsaws from the house and went down the road to look for trees that were on the road,” Walter said.

The clan revved up the saws and carved up the timber, clearing the way for neighbors and strangers traveling the road.

They began their day of goodwill hunting soon after dawn's break.

“We started about 6:15 a.m.,” Walter said. Within an hour or so they had already whittled away six trees that were obstructing traffic.

They were just getting started. “We're going be out here for as long as it takes,” he said.

Power was out at most of, if not all of the homes on the long road that stretches from Penn Township to Butler Township.

The Walter home was not spared. But at least he had a generator.

On the way to his warm house about 9 a.m. was Walter's daughter-in-law and her newborn — 3-week-old Scarlett Emily — whose own home on Powell Road in Penn Township was earlier hit by a power outage.

This is one of several stories from the storm that will appear on Facebook or in the Sunday's paper.
